Drake's was founded in 1977. The original product line included men's scarves and accessories, as well as some exquisite ties and handkerchiefs. Today, Drakes has expanded its offer to fully embody the principle of relaxed elegance, producing soft tailoring in Italy, exquisite knitwear in Scotland, and shirts in the brand's very own shirt factory in Chard, Somerset.
The preserve of hard workers for the best part of two centuries, the chore jacket is one of those garments that brings with it a reassuring sense of solidity.
Drake's took their popular Five-Pocket Chore Jacket (so called because it is a counterpart to their Five-Pocket Trousers, not, as you may think, because of the number of pockets it has – it actually has six pockets) and had it made up in that most revered of working fabrics.
Crafted from a robust 12.6oz cotton duck, a tightly woven cotton fabric with two yarns in the warp and a single yarn in the weft for a smooth, plain weave less prone to tears, the name is derived from from the dutch word for cotton - ‘doek’ - and since 1899 has been used for sails, tents and, of course, workwear.
In doing so, Drake's have created a piece of clothing with all the utility of a chore jacket – a surfeit of pockets; a comfortable, roomy shape – that will age and patinate beautifully over the years.
Finishing things off with classic copper rivets and you have an unbeatable everyday jacket, unmatched in its durability and timeless design. If you feel so inclined, you could even wear it to do your chores. It won’t let you down.
